Every fall, before the first press of the vintage even begins, a quieter harvest unfolds among the hills of our St. Helena property. It moves fast. It moves by hand. And it ends, often within hours, in a bottle of extra virgin olive oil that carries the taste of the exact morning it was picked.

This is milling day at Marciano Estate, and it is where our award-winning organic olive oil begins.

The Grove

Our olive groves are home to hundreds of trees, a mix of Italian and Spanish cultivars chosen deliberately for the character each brings to the final oil. Frantoio, Leccino, Maurino, Nocellara and Coratina share the hillside with Arbequina, Manzanillo and Empeltre, alongside the Mission variety long associated with California groves. Some of our signature blends draw from this range of cultivars, each one contributing its own note of pepper, green fruit or herbal depth.

The groves are farmed organically, and that commitment shapes the rest of the property too. Cover crops keep the soil alive between the rows. Each spring, sheep graze through the estate, a practice that manages growth naturally while returning nutrients to the earth. Nothing here is left bare for long.

Harvest Day

When the olives reach the right point of ripeness, usually in the fall, our team hand-harvests them into small, vented bins. The bins matter as much as the hands. Vented containers keep the fruit from bruising or overheating in transit, which protects the oil’s flavor before it ever reaches the mill.

Speed is the discipline here. Olives begin to oxidize the moment they are picked, and that oxidation is the enemy of a fresh, vibrant oil. So the bins move directly from grove to mill, often within the same day the fruit is picked.

Milling Day

Our on-site mill means the olives never leave the property between harvest and extraction. That single detail defines the character of Marciano Estate olive oil: the fruit is pressed just moments after picking, while it is still cool and full of the aromatic compounds that fade with time and handling.

The result is a certified organic, 100 percent extra virgin olive oil, bottled unfiltered to preserve its vibrant, pungent, spicy character. Unfiltered oils carry more of the fruit’s natural sediment and polyphenols, the compounds responsible for the peppery finish our oils are known for.

After milling, the work continues. The leftover olive pomace is composted on-site, returning to the soil that grew it. It is a closed loop, grove to mill to earth and back again.

Recognition Beyond the Estate

We do not use the word “award-winning” loosely. Marciano Estate olive oil has earned multiple gold medals from the California Olive Oil Council, along with recognition from the Napa Valley Olive Oil Competition, and was named Best EVOO of the USA in 2023 by the EVOO World Ranking (EVOOWR). Our Italian blend and Arbequina both earned Gold Awards at the 2024 New York International Olive Oil Competition (NYIOOC), one of the largest juried olive oil competitions in the world (source: Olive Oil Times).

These are not marks of prestige for their own sake. They are third-party confirmation of what we already ask of every bottle: fruit picked at the right moment, milled without delay, and bottled honestly.

A Gift Worth Explaining

Extra virgin olive oil this specific makes an unusually good gift, in part because it comes with a story to tell. A bottle of Marciano Estate EVOO is not just an ingredient. It is a grove in St. Helena, a harvest day timed to the hour, and a mill that never lets the fruit wait.

For the holidays, for a hostess, for a client who already has everything, an estate-grown, organic, award-winning olive oil offers something a gift card cannot: provenance. Pair it with a favorite Marciano wine, or send it on its own alongside a note about the harvest behind it.
